The Office of Northern Australia

The Office of Northern Australia (ONA) is driving the implementation of Australia Governements northern Australia agenda.
ONA coordinates delivery of the 2015 White Paper on Developing Northern Australia, and provides the Australian Government with policy advice and analysis on further northern initiatives.

Our North, Our Future—the first ever White Paper on Developing Northern Australia —is a vision for unlocking the north’s full potential backed by a $6 billion economic development plan. The White Paper prioritises support for:

• A Northern trade and investment gateway
• A diversified economy
•Indigenous entrepreneurs and business
• World-class infrastructure
• Investment in water infrastructure
• World leading research and innovation

Grains Research and Development Corporation 

The grains industry plays a vital role in Australia’s economy, comprising 24 percent of total agricultural exports.

The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) supports the industry through investing in research, development and extension (RD&E) to create enduring profitability for Australian grain growers.
The GRDC invests over $192 million in around 900 research, development and extension (RD&E) projects to directly benefit growers across a broad range of research areas – from molecular biology to farming systems. Within their carefully balanced portfolio is a range of investments, from long-term, high risk, ‘blue sky’ research to short-term, outcome-focused applied research at the local level. The GRDC’s investments deliver results and the aim is to continually break new ground for growers.

GRDC is working to ensure Australian grain growers have:

• better practices developed faster
• access to superior varieties that enable them to effectively compete in global markets
• new products and services (both on and off farm) to assist growers to effectively compete in global grain markets
• the awareness and capacity to optimise adoption of grains research outputs.

The Cooperative Research Company for Developing Northern Australia

The Cooperative Research Centre for Developing Northern Australia (CRCNA) supports industry-led research collaborations that develop new technologies, products and services which address industry problems in Northern Australia. The CRCNA  works closely with NT, WA and QLD governments; multiple agricultural and food businesses, private health providers, universities and, other research bodies, financial services companies, and regional development organisations to  deliver high impact research which will lower investment barriers and enable significant capital to flow in Northern Australia leading to :

Increased GDP
Increased investment 
Improved (supply chain) efficiencies
Create new jobs to assist population growth
Improved capabilities and wellbeing of the community

In striving to achieve its strategic objectives, the CRCNA investment mandate extends to three themes:

1. Agriculture and food
Removing barriers and improving supply and value chains for new and existing northern agricultural industries.
2. Tropical health service delivery
Identifying new models and approaches, early detection, health seeking behaviour and mental health.
3. Traditional Owner led business development
Identifying new models and approaches and building an industry ready skilled workforce in the fields of agriculture, food and/or health industries.

The Plantsmith is a highly automated purpose built wholesale nursery supplying seedlings, potted colour, herbs and landscaping plants throughout the Northern Territory and northern Western Australia.

Based at Howard Springs 25 kilometres south of Darwin, the nursery employs nine staff and is NIASA and EcoHort accredited.
 
Perhaps unique in Australia, our entire range is produced without the use of herbicides and insecticides (except organically certified).
