Traditional Owners

The Traditional Owners of Darwin are the Larrakia (saltwater) people, who warmly welcome visitors onto their land, making Darwin a great place to immerse and inform yourself in stories and traditions of the oldest living continuous culture on earth.

Enjoy local galleries and cultural experiences, or if you are willing to head out of town, visit the World Heritage Listed Kakadu National Park to view ancient rock art and witness the sunset at Ubirr Rock. It is an experience you will never forget.

History 

Significant historical events and natural disasters, such as the Bombing of Darwin in 1942 and Cyclone Tracy in 1974, have shaped the city and its many colourful characters. 

The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) and Darwin Military Museum offer interactive experiences that capture the resilience and spirit of this former frontier town. 

Adventure

If it's adventure you seek, you've come to the right place! Get up close with a Saltwater Crocodile or catch an iconic barramundi on a fishing charter. 

A visit to Litchfield National Park to swim in the pristine waterfalls is only a few hours out of town and can be done in a day trip. A great way to explore the harbour is by jet ski or helicopter; you can even take a heli-pub or heli-fishing tour!  

Dine, Shop & Play

Once considered an outback town, modern-day Darwin offers world-class restaurants, pubs, clubs and other amenities equal to that of other capital cities.

The Darwin Waterfront Precinct and the CBD offer a variety of shops, restaurants and cafes to meet all tastes and budgets. If you are after cultural art or fashion, there are plenty of galleries and designer boutiques that support local First Nations artists from across the Territory. 

Community

With a community of more than 60 nationalities and 70 different ethnic backgrounds, Darwin is rich in cultural diversity. It has an incredible food scene and is famous for its buzzing market culture. Most notable is the Mindil Beach Sunset Market on Thursdays and Sundays during the 'Dry Season' (May to October)! You can enjoy Asian-style street food as well as modern or international cuisines.
