Masterclass 2: How to be a trusted advisor

With Dr John James & Denise Bewsell
Aug 24, 2026 | 1000 - 1600

Effective advisory work relies on more than technical expertise - it depends on the strength of the relationships we build. In this three-hour masterclass, John James and Denise Bewsell share practical, evidence-based approaches to help farm advisors and consultants deepen trust and rapport with the farmers they support. Drawing on the Extension Model of Practice and illustrated with relatable, real-world examples, the session explores how to prepare well, listen deeply, and communicate with clarity and transparency. Participants will learn how to build connection from the very first interaction, create space for farmer-led problem-solving, and bring technical advice into the conversation at the right moment. We also unpack the small behaviours - before, during, and after a farm visit - that make the biggest difference to credibility, confidence, and follow-through. Advisors will leave with practical tools they can apply immediately to strengthen relationships, improve engagement, and enable meaningful, lasting change in their day-to-day work.

Field Trip Tickets

Field Trip 1: Douglas Daily - Quintessential outback agriculture

Full-day field trip
Aug 27, 2026

Join us for an immersion into the heart of Northern Territory agriculture, where the once fabled ‘Northern Myth’ has morphed into prosperous reality - the Douglas Daly region. This pioneering region has true diversity. This includes vast cattle stations, broadacre cotton, grain, silage, hay, mangos and citrus. The Douglas Daly celebrated a true step change in 2023, when Australia’s newest cotton Gin was officially opened near Katherine. This will transform the region, allowing cropping and cattle enterprises to complement one another. Discover farming on the edge; where average annual rainfall exceeds 1.25m (yes we measure in meters), average maximum temperatures exceed 35°C and keep an eye out for Crocodiles and Buffalo. This tour focusses on the soils that make everything grown here possible. Highlighted on the day will be soil demonstration pits, moisture monitoring equipment and amelioration practices. This is absolutely one not to miss – sign up with registration.

Full-day field trip
Aug 27, 2026

Join us for a tour of one of the most dynamic agricultural and aquacultural regions of the North – The coastal plains. Here everything is grown – both terrestrial and aquatic. Since well-publicised fiascos of paddy rice in the 60’s, this region has since became one of the most diverse horticulture precincts in the country. Within a short drive from Darwin you’ll find mangoes, jackfruit, rambutan, turf, barramundi and even mushrooms been grown. Don’t miss it—sign up today, and we look forward to welcoming you onboard!

You’ll be amazed by the diversity right in the heart of Darwin. Don’t miss it—sign up today, and we look forward to welcoming you onboard!
