Depletion of TRMT2A alleviates pathological features in an MJD/SCA3 mouse model
Biography
Tiago Moreira-Gomes is a PhD student with expertise in neuroscience and tRNA modifications. He is affiliated with the Algarve Biomedical Center Research Institute (ABC-Ri) at the University of Algarve, Portugal. Tiago holds a bachelor’s degree in applied biology (2015) and a master’s degree in health sciences (2018), both from the University of Minho, Portugal. In 2022, he received a competitive scholarship from the Portuguese Science Foundation to pursue his doctoral program in Biomedical Sciences. Tiago’s research primarily focuses on molecular targets and therapeutic approaches for neurodegenerative diseases, in particular Machado-Joseph disease/spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (MJD/SCA3) and Huntington’s disease. So far, he has four publications, two as the first author of book chapter and review, and the other two are original research articles.
Tiago supervised a biomedical sciences bachelor’s undergraduate student final research project in 2023 that investigated the impact of Trmt2a depletion in cerebellar atrophy in MJD/SCA3. His teaching portfolio includes two academic years as an assistant of professor for the practical course “Gene and Cell Therapy” in the Biomedical Sciences undergraduate program at the University of Algarve. Recently, he also gave a lecture (2 hours) on “Molecular Cloning and Recombinant DNA Technology” to Master in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Coimbra. To raise awareness about ataxias, Tiago went to a High School to give a talk about ataxias, the current therapeutic approaches and the efforts that are being made in research.
Tiago presented his work at several national and international meetings, including the ISN-ESN Meeting 2023, the FENS Regional Meeting 2023, the FENS Forum 2024, and the Gordon Research Conference on Cell Death 2024. He has also actively organized significant events, including the "ESN-ISN Neurochemistry School 2023" and the " European Neuroscience Conference by Doctoral Students 2023" conference.
His scientific pathway has been recognized through several prestigious awards and grants. These include the Portuguese Neuroscience Society Initiative Award for organizing the “Walk for Ataxias” awareness event, and travel grants from the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies (FENS) and ATAXIA UK to support his participation in international conferences.
